Of all of our travels we have enjoyed the culinary treats of the Bavarian countries the most. We spent a lot of time in Bavaria using the Euororail Pass like no one else ever did.
As a high school and college student I studied the German Language for the language requirement for graduation. For many of my co-students it was drudgery, but for me I fell in love with the language and did extremely well, possibly because of my fluency in Swedish (another Germanic language) or because I liked the food so much I that I wanted to learn how to order the menu. Only the Lord will ever Know how much I love the Bavarian food.
Our first culinary experience in Germany was in the town of Koblenz. This quaint city is rested on the corner where the Rhine and the Mosel rivers come together. The significance of this is that it's not only a meeting of rivers, it's a meeting of two of the most important wine regions in the world. We accidentally hit the town at the beginning of Oktoberfest and when we stopped for directions we met a "local" who was so impressed that an "American" could speak German that he took us into his home for the evening and the next day he took us on a culinary tour of the region ending in a huge Oktoberfest party. He picked up the tab for everything.
The rest of our trip in Germany, Austria and Switzerland was a series of shopping trips to the bakeries, sausage shops and the local pubs for wonderful German Beers and the wines of Bavaria.
When we returned home we hit the books to learn all that we could about foods from the region gaining weight as we studied.
